Lava Landscape

Ragna Róbertsdóttir is known for her minimalist wall paintings made out of ground lava stones. These tiny shrapnel-like stones are applied directly to the walls, seamlessly merging nature and architecture. "From the mid-1990s to the present, Róbertsdóttir has produced numerous versions of her innovative non-paintings, which jettison just about everything that has traditionally constituted a painting, including canvas, brush, paint, and image. Some are quite small, while others are large and encompass the greater part of a wall. In particular, Róbertsdóttir’s lava landscapes are enthralling and engender rapt absorption on the part of the viewer. They are also filled with implicit noise and agitation and evoke a geological power that is primal, earthshaping, and chaotic.” (Volk 2018, 5)
