Cognitive Shift

In Cognitive Shift, Mikko Rikala questions the importance we give to the constant flow of news. Using pages of the Financial Times, he softens their visual presence through Japanese washi paper, reducing the noise and urgency of information that may dominate our attention one day and disappear the next. Against this muted flow, Rikala places his photographs of natural phenomena, recurring cycles and everyday observations. Inspired by the idea of longue durée, which looks beyond immediate events toward long-term processes, the series brings together two notions of time: the linear time of news and the cyclical time of nature. Their encounter generates new meanings and invites alternative ways of seeing the world.
